The first Cool Climate Wine Show, 2000 The inaugural Red Hill Show 'Cool Climate Wine Show' held on 15th March was an outstanding success. The show was established to create an opportunity for the 'best of the best' to compete against each other in a regional wine show of the highest calibre. With 10 gold medals awarded, 33 silver and 133 bronze, there is no doubt this was achieved. The complete list of awards and medal winners is below. Competition entries were received from all cool climate regions of the Southern Hemisphere. At close of entry there were 373 entries from 80+ wineries, 17 of which were from New Zealand and one from Chile. The Mornington Peninsula had the largest number of entries with 24, Tasmania 10, Gippsland 8, Yarra Valley 8, the Kyneton/Macedon area 9, Ballarat 4 and Sunbury 1. James Halliday was chief judge. The other judges were Kate McIntyre (Fine Wine Manager of Philip Murphy Wines), Andrew Hood (Tasmanian winemaker), Todd Dexter (Mornington Peninsula winemaker), Ralph Kyte-Powell (the Melbourne Age wine writer), Sally McGill (FD&C wine distributors) and Ben Edwards (sommelier at Circa the Prince Restaurant). Associate judges were Daniele Greene Tucks Ridge winemaker) and Ben Canaider (Mark Shield Award winning winewriter). To satisfy eligibility criteria, the grapes for the wine must have grown either south of Latitude 37.5o South or in an area where the average number of days exceeding 30o Celsius in February does not exceed 7 occasions. The competition is only open to Southern Hemisphere entrants at this stage.
